Earlier History

Many things point out that women have participated in boxing since its beginning. The earliest reports mentioning women in boxing date back to the 1700s. One of them even includes Elizabeth Wilkinson, a famous and successful female fighter of the era. 

The next century saw female boxing being banned in various countries completely. Thankfully, the effect didn’t last long: people started considering sports safer after more regulations were introduced and padded gloves became mandatory. This increased safety level paved the way for women’s boxing, an activity many people called “unladylike” at the time. Some events still happen. For example, the first official female boxing match in the U.S. occurred in the New York Hills Theater in 1876. It was between Nell Saunders and Rose Harland. 

Emergence as a Recognized Sport

Women’s boxing appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1904 Olympics. Being primarily an exhibition, there were no competitions for a medal; the event mainly aimed to promote the discipline.

The sport rose during the 1920s, with a women’s boxing club appearing in London in that decade. The activity still remained highly controversial despite being quite safe at the time. The current mayor rejected a plan to hold a match during that era. 

The 1970s and 1980s were the decades when women’s boxing started to get significant recognition. Many different championships were held in various parts of the world. People began to recognize the activity. The late 1980s saw Sweden become the first country to lift the ban on amateur female boxing.

The trend continued in the 1990s. The first sanctioned amateur boxing fight took place in the U.S. in 1993. The Amateur International Boxing Association lifted the women’s boxing ban the following year. So did England in 1996. In 1997, the U.S. held its first women’s boxing championship.

Finally, the Olympics started recognizing the discipline, lifting the ban on the activity in 2009. Women’s boxing first became part of the program during the 2012 Summer Olympics and has appeared during the Games ever since.

The Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Boxing

The rules are mostly the same as for regular boxing: two opponents fight each other during several rounds. Possible ways of winning include knockouts, technical knockouts, winning by points, or disqualifying one of the fighters. But there are certain differences between men’s and women’s boxing rules. 

• Amateur women’s boxing matches consist of four rounds, 2 minutes each, as opposed to three rounds, 3 minutes each, in men’s boxing.
• All fighters have to wear headgear.
• Breastguards and other forms of chest protection are also mandatory.
• Pregnant athletes can’t participate in a fight.

Elizabeth Wilkinson

We’ve already talked about her earlier in this article. She was a famous bare-knuckle fighter from England. She lived in the early 1700’s. She was also famous for practicing weapon arts. We don’t know much about her life, just some bits from various periods of time, but she deserves her place in this article by being one of the earliest known female boxers.

Nicola Adams 

This British fighter is best known for being the first woman to become an Olympic champion in boxing in 2012, the year when the discipline appeared in the Olympics. She won the second gold medal 4 years later at Rio 2015. She got both fighting as an amateur. Her professional career lasted from 2017 to 2019, when she became the WBO (World Boxing Organization)  female flyweight champion. She successfully defended her title in 2019 before retiring as an undefeated champion with 6 professional fights under her belt.

Amanda Serrano

This Puerto Rican fighter is one of the best in female boxing history. She also has experience in MMA. Serrano holds titles in seven different weight classes, which is the world record. Various organizations consider her one of the best currently active female fighters. She’s currently the undisputed female featherweight boxing champion, holding the title since 2019 for WBO, IBC, and WBO titles since 2021 and  WBA one since 2023. Her sister, Cindy Serrano, is also a successful fighter.
